Protective hairstyles not only help to take a break from daily styling, but they are also great for keeping your hair healthy and strong. These hairstyles help to protect your hair from environmental damage, harsh chemicals, and heat-styling tools which can be harmful. However, if not done right, protective hairstyles can lead to pain and discomfort. Here are some tips on how to avoid the hurt that can come with protective hairstyles:

Take Time to Prepare

Before installing a protective hairstyle, take some time to prepare your hair. Detangle your hair properly and moisturize it by applying a good leave-in conditioner or oil to the strands. It’s essential to make sure that your hair is in a good condition before installing a protective style. This will help to reduce the chances of breakage and discomfort.

Choose the Right Hair Extensions

When choosing hair extensions for your protective style, select ones that are soft and lightweight. Avoid hair extensions that are too heavy or rough, as these can pull on your hairline and scalp, causing pain and discomfort. Synthetic hair extensions are not recommended as they can be rough on the scalp, causing itching and pain.

Be Gentle While Installing

While installing protective hairstyles, it’s essential to be gentle. Avoid pulling your hair too tightly as this can lead to hair loss, scalp pain, and discomfort. If you start to feel pain during installation, stop and take a break. Don't continue when you feel discomfort because the style is supposed to be protective.

Don't neglect Scalp Health

While wearing protective hairstyles, it's easy to neglect the scalp, but this should not be the case. Use a scalp massager to stimulate blood circulation and nourish your hair. Also, apply a scalp oil or treatment regularly to keep your scalp and hair healthy.

Avoid Keeping the Style for too Long

Protective hairstyles should not be kept for too long as it can lead to hair breakage. Take out the style every two to three weeks to allow your hair some rest and fresh air. Wash and moisturize your hair during this period to encourage healthy growth.

Protective hairstyles are great for keeping your hair healthy and protected. However, it's essential to take the necessary precautions to avoid pain and discomfort. Choose the right hair extensions, be gentle while installing, take care of your scalp, and avoid keeping the style for too long. With these tips, you can enjoy protective hairstyles without the hurt.
