Congressman James Clyburn announces $3 million to preserve and restore HBCUs in SC

Congressman James Clyburn announced on Tuesday that $3 million from the National Park Service (NPS) will go to preserving and restoring Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in South Carolina. The funding will support four projects that will focus on repairing historic structures on campuses. “I am pleased to see another round of essential funding coming to South Carolina’s HBCUs,” said Congressman Clyburn. “I applaud the National Park Service for supporting these preservation and rehabilitation projects. This continued support will help future generations remember the legacy of HBCUs.” NPS has awarded $9.7 million total for 14 projects in 10 states as part of the Historic Perservation Fund's HBCU grant program. South Carolina received 30% of the allocated funding and was the only state to receive funding for multiple projects. Congress designated funding for the HBCU grant program in Fiscal Year 2022 through the Historic Preservation Fund. Congressman Clyburn has always been a champion of the program, successfully passing legislation to authorize it in 2003 and 2019. The four projects that will receive funding are:
