Clark Atlanta University to host the 13th Annual National Symposium on Prostate Cancer

Clark Atlanta University to host the 13th Annual National Symposium on Prostate Cancer
Posted By: S. Moore on May 22, 2023

Atlanta, GA (May 8, 2023) - Scientists and researchers from all over the world are set to gather for the 13th National Symposium on Prostate Cancer and Dr. Sidney A. McNairy, Jr. Student Symposium, scheduled for September 17th - 19, 2023, at the Center for Cancer Research and Therapeutic Development (CCRTD) at Clark Atlanta University.

Behind skin cancer, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men, with over 3.1 million survivors in the United States alone. African American/Black men are 1.7x more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetimes and more than 2x more likely to die from the disease (American Cancer Society, Cancer Facts & Figures 2023).

According to CCRTD faculty member and researcher Dr. Daqing Wu, “The National Symposium on Prostate Cancer at the CCRTD is the only one of its kind in North America. Since April 2005, it has been a catalyst in promoting scientific innovation and advancing research and community efforts to address barriers in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer, a lethal disease that disproportionately affects African Americans.”

During this highly organized one and 1/2-day event consisting of presentations, poster sessions, and workshop discussions, attendees will learn about the most recent progress in basic, translational, and clinical studies on hormone-refractory prostate cancer. Attendees will also be able to network face-to-face with internationally renowned researchers, clinicians & community leaders, explore new funding opportunities at federal agencies and private foundations, and foster collaborations in research, training, and community engagement.

“For our students, the Dr. Sidney A. McNairy, Jr. Student Symposium provides an extraordinary platform to showcase their scientific talents and outstanding research at the national level and build a personalized network for their career development.” - Daqing Wu, Ph.D.

This is a must-attend event for anyone interested in exchanging innovative ideas on the latest developments in prostate cancer research, treatment, care, and support.

About Clark Atlanta University

Clark Atlanta University was formed with the consolidation of Atlanta University and Clark College, both of which hold unique places in the annals of African American history. Atlanta University, established in 1865 by the American Missionary Association, was the nation’s first institution to award graduate degrees to African Americans. Clark College, established four years later in 1869, was the nation’s first four-year liberal arts college to serve a primarily African American student population. Today, with nearly 4,000 students, CAU is the largest of the four institutions (CAU, Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Morehouse School of Medicine) that comprise the Atlanta University Center Consortium. It is also the largest of the 37-member UNCF institutions. Notable alumni include: James Weldon Johnson; American civil rights activist, poet, and songwriter (Lift Every Voice and Sing “The Black National Anthem”; Ralph David Abernathy Sr., American civil rights activist; Congressman Hank

Johnson, Georgia District 4; Kenya Barris, American award-winning television and movie producer; Kenny Leon, Tony Award-winning Broadway Director; Jacque Reid, Emmy Award-winning Television Personality and Journalist; Brandon Thompson, Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion for NASCAR; Valeisha Butterfield Jones, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at the Recording Academy.
