UNCF Annual Student Leadership Conference Returns In Person May 31-June 2

UNCF Annual Student Leadership Conference Returns In Person May 31-June 2
Posted By: Shae Johnson on May 23, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC—Nearly 120 undergraduate students from across the U.S. will convene in Washington, D.C., for the 13th annual UNCF (United Negro College Fund) Student Leadership Conference (SLC). The multi-day event will feature presentations and keynote addresses from corporate leaders on professional development topics, aimed at equipping students with skills needed to be successful as interns and early career professionals. The conference, hosted by Wells Fargo and supported by other corporate and foundation sponsors, will take place at Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Rockville, MD, from May 31-June 2.

As the U.S. becomes a more diverse population, employers face a critical challenge to find and hire the next generation of culturally diverse professionals in the high-growth industries of business, computer science, education, engineering, finance, healthcare and technology.

UNCF’s Student Leadership Conference will provide opportunities for diverse rising juniors and seniors attending colleges and universities from across the country including historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to participate in an intense training simulation with coaching from high-level business and nonprofit professionals. Students will also attend workshops to equip them with skills needed to be successful as interns and early-career professionals, as they begin to embark upon internships and fellowships at the conclusion of the conference.

Announcing the celebration of this year’s theme, “We Got the Keys: Unlocking the Leader Within”, will be Early Reese, UNCF chief operating officer, Larry Griffith, UNCF senior vice president, programs and student services, and Shantae Joseph, senior vice president, external engagements, Wells Fargo & Company.

Additional conference speakers will include:
• Brandon V. Ray, author and speaker, Baar Consulting
• Marica Fairweather, senior director, UNCF
• Estee Mendoza-Irby, director grants management, UNCF
• Shayna Yvonne Rudd, psychotherapist, The Legends House
• Rashida Wilson, CEO, NeHermaih Leadership Institute
• Robert Kennedy, III, president, Kennetik Kommunications
• Markell Byrd, senior vice president; diverse segment leader - head of affluent markets, Wells Fargo
• Chelsea Williams, founder & CEO, Reimagine Talent Co.

• Maria Kirby, vice president of government relations, The Walt Disney Company
• Candace Barnes, MBA, global head of DEI, Papa Johns
• Sheila Jacobs, managing director-market manager, Wells Fargo Advisors

“Our Student Leadership Conference is a culmination of a yearlong effort to recruit and professionally develop the best, diverse college-student talent for valuable career experiences. We want them to launch out with confidence and with real tools to make their opportunities successful,” said Taliah Givens, senior director, student professional development programs.

“I got to learn about corporate social responsibility, diversity and inclusion, and organizational behavior. And all of this has best prepared me for my internship’” Said Livi Grant, Florida A&M University alum and past SLC attendee.

UNCF and Wells Fargo look forward to impacting the lives of the students attending and helping them to gain the knowledge they will need to enter the workplace.

“Wells Fargo is proud to continue its support of UNCF to help empower the next generation of leaders and support the next steps of their career journey,” said Georgette “Gigi” Dixon, head of external engagement for diverse segments, representation, and inclusion, Wells Fargo. “Together, Wells Fargo and UNCF can help ensure the students are ready to successfully enter our nation’s workforce and thrive in the years to come.”.
