Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on May 26, 2023 At the April 14th Inauguration and Scholarship Gala, Harris-Stowe State University (HSSU) celebrated its 21st president, Dr. LaTonia Collins Smith, its first female, African American leader. The Gala raised nearly $1M, earmarked for scholarships, from 33 sponsors, led by Title Sponsor, Wells Fargo and lead sponsors, Bank of America and St. Martin’s Child Center. Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Jeff Shaw, noted that, “The funds raised will support a new Presidential Scholarship and endowment fund in Dr. Collins Smith’s name. The fund reflects Dr. Collins Smith’s dedication to serving our students, enabling them to earn a college degree to set them up for success.” Students spoke at the event, underscoring the importance of a Harris-Stowe education. “Being a scholarship recipient has afforded me the opportunity to not just fulfill my dreams, but the dreams that my family has for me,” HSSU student Amiya Jones said. “I was grateful to be part of the honors college. I was held to the highest standard and was encouraged to be my best self.” ‘A Different World’ actor Kadeem Hardison and radio personality Carol Daniel were co-hosts of the gala, with music provided by The Dirty Muggs. The 600 in attendance at the sold-out event included community supporters and local university and college presidents, as well as presidents from other Historically Black Colleges and Universities. "I am incredibly appreciative of the support that the community has given Harris-Stowe,” Dr. Collins Smith said. “We are engaged in outstanding partnerships with so many in the community. This benefits not only our students, but all of us in St. Louis. Raising needed scholarship funds for our students is the greatest cause for celebration."
