NEWS: THE CROWN ACT IN TEXAS HAS NOW BEEN “SIGNED” BY THE GOVERNOR!

The THREE (3) people referenced in the article are responsible for the CROWN Act in Texas!

It’s no secret I personally came up with the idea to change the law (in 2018) as the best way to tackle race-based hair discrimination, and I have been leading the policy work NONstop since 2018–even at the height of COVID!

Thank you to my Soror and friend, Rep. Rhetta Bowers for not only answering my call in 2019 (well BEFORE Deandre Arnold’s case) and saying yes, but for trusting me as a strategist! Her partnership & leadership are unmatched! I can’t thank her enough for what she did in the legislature. She put in the work when not easy or deemed politically wise.

All I can say is those Deltas mean business! 🔺

Senator Miles, my friend, he truly embodies what “STAND WITH BLACK WOMEN” looks like in real time! While NONE of this was possible without him, he constantly said “I don’t need to be in front” even when we wanted him to be! I am so grateful for him and how he quietly covered us in the Senate! He is a different kind. We need more like him in politics!
_ _ _
NOW that it’s signed, I need to say a few things.

1. A LOT of people thought “and” said we couldn’t do it! 😂

2. Some when asked if they wanted to support, said they’re still trying to “figure it out” and opted not to move. I replied “no worries at all” via text, knowing their support was never required here and was for their benefit not ours.

3. Some who have no regard for etiquette “and” do NOT understand the politics of policymaking (making moves for content and “unearned” credit versus change) jeopardized our STRATEGY! The CROWN Act was signed “despite” that. You have to either understand politics and/or defer to those who do!

I use “responsible for the CROWN Act…” intentionally. That’s because we led it, but there are many people who have lifted and supported this work for no other reason than they genuinely care. I have nothing but appreciation for them. Empowering people is one of the things I’m most proud of here. I flew to Texas and did a training for advocates who truly wanted to help and be effective. 💜

Thank you, village!

JOURNALISTS— please do due diligence and contact the people DOING THE WORK. Celebrities/influencers while helpful for raising awareness, have absolutely NOTHING to do at all with the CROWN “Act.” Resist the urge to do those “send questions” to a publicist & piece together a story with typed responses situations.

Thank YOU Richard Fowler for this piece. Thank you April D. Ryan, Janice Gassam Asare, Ph.D., and Elizabeth Leiba for always coming to the source!
