Shepherd To Play At Historic Rucker Park In HBCU All-Star Dream Classic

Shepherd To Play At Historic Rucker Park In HBCU All-Star Dream Classic
Posted By: S. Moore on June 07, 2023

BALTIMORE, Md. (June 2, 2023)--Morgan State women's basketball graduate forward Charlene Shepherd has been invited to play in the inaugural Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) All-Star Dream Classic in Harlem, N.Y.

The basketball event will take place this summer on Saturday, August 5, 2023 on the historic court of Rucker Park.

"It means everything to me, it's a blessing I can't begin to explain," said Shepherd on being selected to play in the HBCU All-Star Dream Classic. "I'm truly just grateful that God had continuously covered me during this season I have been in."

The event will feature men's and women's all-star games featuring recent HBCU players who are now eligible for NBA, WNBA, ABA, Big 3, European and other Professional league opportunities.

The women's game will tip-off at 4:30 pm, followed by the men at 7 pm.

"I am honored to be receiving this opportunity to play in this game at Rucker Park," said Shepherd. "What went through my head was excitement and joy. I've heard great things about the environment of what comes with playing there, so I am genuinely excited about this journey."

A native of Killeen, Texas, Shepherd was a two-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Co-Player of the Week and a three-time MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honoree this past season. She was an All-MEAC First Team selection and also garnered All-MEAC Defensive Team and BOXTOROW First-Team All-America accolades.

Shepherd started 27 of the 29 games played and finished the season averaging a team-leading 15.2 points and finished second on the team in rebounding at 6.9 boards per game. She led the Lady Bears in scoring, assists (68), steals (62), blocks (13) and knocked down a team-best 114-of-154 free throws.

She ranked second in the MEAC in scoring, third in steals, fifth in rebounding, seventh in field goal percentage (39.2), fifth in free throw percentage, ninth in assists and 18th in blocked shots. She reached double figures in scoring 24 times, rebounds six times and had five double-doubles.

Shepherd tallied a career-high 27 points at Coppin State (1/14) and grabbed a career-best 17 rebounds at Norfolk State (1/23).

Shepherd, who spent the last two seasons at Morgan State after transferring from North Texas, finished her collegiate career recording a combined 1,086 points and 606 rebounds.

With 2023 marking the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop, luminaries and music legends will be part of the festive occasion, making the HBCU All-Star Dream Classic a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

This event is expected to be a groundbreaking moment in the history of HBCU. In addition to showcasing incredibly talented athletes, Divine 9 step shows, cheerleaders, youth bands performances and school supply gift boxes will highlight the full experience of HBCU.

"I have never been or played at Rucker Park; hopefully I can leave my mark on my first impression," said Shepherd.
