In honor of Black Music Month, we shine a spotlight on two legendary bands that grace the stage of the Orange Blossom Classic, Florida A&M University’s Marching 100 and Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom. These renowned Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) bands have left an indelible mark on the world of music, pop culture, and campus life.



HBCU bands, including Florida A&M University’s Marching 100 and Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom, have had a profound impact on the music industry and popular culture as a whole. Their rich heritage and innovative performances have influenced numerous genres, from jazz and funk to hip-hop and R&B. HBCU bands have produced notable alumni who have gone on to become influential figures in the music world, such as Sean “P Diddy” Combs, Common, David Banner, Wale, 2 Chainz and Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Erykah Badu.

HBCU bands, including the Marching 100 and Sonic Boom, play a vital role in fostering school spirit and creating a sense of community on campus. They are one of the most celebrated organizations, revered for their exceptional talent and strong dedication.



The bands perform at various campus events, athletic games, and parades, lifting the spirits of students, alumni, and fans alike. Through their music and performances, they create a vibrant atmosphere that brings people together and strengthens the bonds within the HBCU community.



The Orange Blossom Classic, held annually on Labor Day Weekend in South Florida, is an iconic event that celebrates the rich tradition of HBCUs. Bands such as Florida A&M University’s Marching 100 and Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom play a pivotal role in this historic event. Their participation in the Battle of the Bands showcases their extraordinary talent and brings an electrifying energy to the festivities. The game itself, held on Sunday, September 3rd, is broadcast live on ESPN, allowing viewers worldwide to witness a taste of HBCU Culture.

The Orange Blossom Classic, with its 2023 theme of “The Reunion,” becomes a testament to the lasting impact and legacy of these remarkable bands and Florida A&M University’s Marching 100 and Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom bring the spirit of reunion to life this Labor Day weekend.
