Step into satisfying service with a career in geriatrics at VA
|
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on July 05, 2023 The national Veteran population is aging, meaning more and more Veterans are coming to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) seeking geriatric care. With more than half of the 8 million Veterans age 65 and older in the United States receiving VA care, we need quality professionals committed to providing them with exceptional health care. But is a career in geriatrics right for you? If you value a connection with your patients, a high level of job satisfaction, a variety of care environments, and putting the needs of your patients first, you’re a perfect fit for a specialty in geriatrics, and the perfect candidate for a job at VA. Providing interaction and satisfaction Geriatrics is considered to be among the most satisfying health professions, according to the American Geriatrics Society, and some rank it as the most satisfying career path for physicians. While there are many factors that impact such fulfillment, the intersection between health care and personal interaction is high on the list. Health care professionals who specialize in geriatrics find that their connections with their patients are inspirational. The deep, meaningful relationships they develop with Veterans create opportunities to learn from that hard-earned experience. Those connections are personally enriching, offering you a broader perspective and a chance to connect on a deeper level with the diverse group of Veterans you serve and the people you work with. Veterans hail from all backgrounds all around the country, so you’ll have the chance to learn about new cultures, new ideas, and new approaches to the world. In short, any of us will tell you, the work we do is not just a job, it’s a mission to provide the best care possible to those who have served our country with honor. VA health care professionals take that mission to heart, advocating for Veterans and making sure they get the care they need, when they need it. It’s a tall order, but we work with a singular focus that makes it simple to explain: we’re here to improve the lives of our Veterans. VA provides versatility and variety Versatility is another attractive quality within geriatric medicine. Not only do geriatrics patients present a wide variety of complex health issues, but there are numerous care settings available to geriatrics professionals, particularly at VA. Like any other professional on our team, you’ll have the opportunity to work in our medical centers, outpatient clinics, and rural facilities, but there are several other specialty care settings that can benefit from your expertise. Geriatrics and extended care physicians often work with Veterans in community living centers, home-like settings designed for those Veterans who need more support. These facilities provide care on the level of a nursing home, which includes help with activities of daily living and skilled medical care. For those Veterans who strive to remain where they are most comfortable, Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) is a unique VA program that provides comprehensive care in the homes of Veterans. As more and more of our patients choose to take advantage of telehealth assistance, you can also provide consultative care to Veterans remotely with intermittent travel to provide more hands-on care. Across these locations, we employ people with a variety of different experiences, skills, perspectives and insights. This diversity helps us innovate and advance new solutions, because you can draw upon your unique experiences to spark new ideas and solve problems. Prioritizing patient-centered care Geriatrics bridges an important connection between clinical best practices and unique care preferences, embracing a patient’s expectations that warrant adjusting individual plans. By getting to know patients and their caregivers in a more personal way, geriatrics health care professionals find connections between what a patient needs to improve their well-being and what they ultimately want from their care. By making those connections, you’ll embrace our belief at VA that, because all Veterans are unique, health care is not one-size-fits-all. By bringing your background and experiences to VA, you’ll be making a difference by giving Veterans a voice. For any medical professional, and particularly one working in geriatrics, finding the time to spend with each individual patient is a must, but this can be considered a luxury in other systems. Choosing a VA career, though, means being able to deliver the highest quality health care in a time frame that works for Veterans and providers. At VA, taking your time with Veterans is a priority. Not only does it help ensure their safety, but it also makes them feel valued, which is essential to forming meaningful, trusting provider-patient relationships. Work at VA Our Veterans need geriatric health care providers who value who they are, meet their unique needs, and can provide the necessary care and quality services in a variety of settings.
