North Carolina A&T State University set to begin construction on new $60 million, five-story dorm this fall

North Carolina A&T State University set to begin construction on new $60 million, five-story dorm this fall
Posted By: S. Moore on July 26, 2023

After years of buying local student apartments, North Carolina A&T State University is ready to build a new dormitory – its first one in almost 20 years.

The Greensboro university will begin construction on a five-story residence hall this fall, Robert Pompey, A&T’s vice chancellor for business and finance, told the Greensboro News & Record. Pompey had not return a request for comment by TBJ by 3 p.m. Wednesday.

N.C. A&T hopes to open the dorm, which will cost about $60 million, by fall 2025. Pompey said it is the first new dorm built in the 16 years he has been at A&T and added that the university is in the process of getting final design approvals.

Announced in 2018, the dorm will be located on Bluford Street across from Harrison Auditorium in one of the oldest parts of campus. Pompey told the News & Record that A&T delayed the project several times in order to buy surrounding apartment complexes for student housing as a quicker way to add beds amid student enrollment increases.

With a total enrollment of 13,487 last fall, N.C. A&T is the second-largest university in the Triad. It is also the largest historically Black university (HBCU) in the country, enrolling more Black students than the top 14 U.S.

News & World report universities combined, according to Todd Simmons, associate vice chancellor for university relations.

Since 2010, A&T has grown its enrollment 27% and has a goal of 15,500 students by 2030, Simmons previously said.

Under the leadership of Pompey – who is a 2023 TBJ C-Suite honoree – N.C. A&T has acquired six student apartment complexes near campus.

This includes both University Landing and University Park, which A&T bought in October 2022 for more than $20 million. University Landing, built in 2009, had 121 units with 254 beds and University Park, built in 2005, had 24 units with 96 beds, according to TBJ reporting.

A&T currently has 15 on-campus residence halls but does not require students to live on-campus during their undergraduate careers.

When the project was announced in 2018, TBJ reported that the dormitory would house 440 beds. It had originally been planned to be completed by the end of 2019 with an original cost of $32 million. Simmons told Triangle Business Journal earlier this month that the residence hall would have 450 beds.

Although the project required approval from the North Carolina General Assembly, the legislature does not typically provide funding for these types of projects, Pompey said. Instead, A&T will take on take debt to complete the building.

A&T, through its real estate foundation, is also working on a $60 million mixed-use project called The Resurgent. The 275,642-square-foot development at the corner of East Market Street and Benbow Road would include more than 70 apartments for young professionals and visiting professors.
