Rust Tabs EWU's Howard White Jr. As Next Head Men's Basketball Coach
|
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on July 26, 2023 The Rust College men’s basketball program has found their new leader as the former Edward Waters Tiger, Howard White Jr., has been selected as the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach. White Jr., a native of Wilmot in southeastern Arkansas, helped transition the former GCAC conference rival into the NCAA’s Division II ranks, beginning as an Assistant during the 2020-21 season before gaining the title of Interim Head Coach the following campaign. In his first year and final in the NAIA, White led the Purple and Orange to a 16-12 overall record despite being ineligible to compete in the conference tournament while playing a mixture of NAIA and SIAC competitors. The debut season in the NCAA had its ups and downs with a respectable 10-19, 7-14 SIAC mark but ended on a high note as the Tigers from Jacksonville knocked off both Spring Hill and Fort Valley State to reach the SIAC Quarterfinals before bowing out to the eventual champions, Miles College. Prior to his time in the Sunshine State, he was busy leading fellow Mississippi school MUW to a USCAA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship while earning USCAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year in 2019 during his lone campaign. His first chance at the top gig was at Concordia (Selma) in Alabama, guiding the Lady Hornets to a pair of USCAA Division I National Titles and recruiting a quartet of All-Americans to the former HBCU. Other stops along his coaching journey in the assistant ranks included Aiken Tech, Benedict, St. Augustine’s, and Bethune-Cookman, as well as North Florida. The Bearcats will hope to improve upon a 10-17 (.370) season that saw the Blue and White hit the .500 mark (7-7) in Gulf Coast play a season ago. Stay tuned for a schedule release in the coming months.
