HBCU Alum, Bomani Jones Loses Shows On HBO, ESPN

HBCU Alum, Bomani Jones Loses Shows On HBO, ESPN
Posted By: S. Moore on July 31, 2023

Over the last two months, Bomani Jones, a graduate of Clark Atlanta University, has experienced two significant losses in his media career. After 16 episodes in two seasons, HBO canceled his Game Theory show in June. Recent reports cite Jones' contract with ESPN will expire at the end of July, with no plans for renewal of his "The Right Time with Bomani Jones" podcast.

"The economic fate of people in sports media is getting dicier and dicier by the day," Jones told FOS. "I think the ESPN layoffs were the beginning of it in a lot of ways.

Seeing what happened [with] the New York Times shutting down their sports department and they moved those people to other desks, but at some point they're probably going to deem those people to be surplus, and they're not going to be there anymore."

In 2021, his "Highly Questionable" ESPN television show with Dan Le Batard was canceled. Andrew Cohen of FOS said Jones' show was the "second-highest-rated podcast among the network's 35+ shows." He is a part of the network's cost-cutting efforts where up to twenty on-air personalities, including Jeff Van Gundy, Todd McShay, Suzy Kolber, Jalen Rose, Keyshawn Johnson, and David Pollack.
