Florida A&M mourns beloved administrator; city grapples with 3rd murder case in 24 hours

Florida A&M mourns beloved administrator; city grapples with 3rd murder case in 24 hours
Posted By: S. Moore on August 02, 2023

The Florida A&M University community is in mourning after a Tuesday afternoon "suspicious death" investigation in a north Tallahassee apartment complex became the capital city's third homicide case in a 24-hour period.

Tallahassee Police Department officers found a man's body at Rolling Hills Apartments on John Knox Road, according to a TPD social media post.

"TPD's Violent Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and have determined foul play is suspected in this case," TPD said in a social media incident alert. "This is an open and active investigation and updates will be provided as more information becomes available."

A few hours after TPD announced the investigation, Florida A&M University confirmed the victim was Andre Green, the university's beloved director of student activities and new student orientation.

"Since he joined FAMU in 2006, Green rose from associate director of Student Government Association & Operations to his present role," FAMU wrote in a statement. "He and his New Student Orientation staff recently completed sessions for the class of 2027."

"Green led the University's historic hosting of the Southern Regional Orientation Workshop this spring. FAMU was the first Historically Black College and University (HBU) to do so.

More than 1,000 orientation leaders and professionals from more than 40 institutions from nine Southeastern states converged on the Tallahassee campus for the three-day event."

President Larry Robinson offered his condolences to students and staff and made grief counselors available to the campus community.

Former and current students posted their grief and shock in comments on a FAMU social media announcement.

"Andre Green is a FAMU legend," one person wrote. "If you were involved in any way on campus, you knew him/ knew of his impact. If he saw something in you, (which he had an incredible eye for) he was determined to help you actualize it. The epitome of Excellence with Caring."

"This is so sad, literally talked to him in orientation praying for the family," another wrote.

As of Tuesday evening, TPD spokesperson Heather Merritt had no details about the cause of death or the circumstances leading up to the death.

This murder follows two separate shooting incidents that killed men in the Frenchtown and Griffin Heights area earlier.

The first shooting was Monday afternoon inside the Time Saver convenience store on Alabama Street between two men who were arguing up until the gunfire.

The second death was Tuesday morning on Dent Street, a residential road. An arrest was made in the Time Saver shooting and a person has been detained in the Dent Street shooting.
