(WACH) — Congressman James Clyburn is set to visit Claflin on Monday to present a major donation from the U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Congressman Clyburn will present a check for $17.4 million to build an innovation center for computer science and biotechnology. Claflin is the first HBCU to receive support from the NIST construction fund. The new facility will increase the university's capacity for research in bioscience, environmental science and cyber security areas. Officials say the innovation center will expand and allow more students to participate in cutting-edge research. Claflin hopes to create a pipeline for globally competitive STEM majors to research opportunities with the NIST, according to officials.
