Montgomery, Alabama to Host Third Annual HBCU Classic Weekend August 31 - September 3
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on August 21, 2023

Montgomery, Alabama will host the third annual HBCU Classic Weekend on August 29 – September 3, 2023, making it once again the only city in the country to host two HBCU classic games in one weekend. Alabama State University will play Southern University and A&M College in their annual Labor Day Classic on Saturday, September 2, and on Sunday, September 3 the Boeing Red Tails Classic, will pit Tuskegee University against Fort Valley State. This action-packed weekend was attended by over 30,000 people in 2022 and had a $1.5M economic impact.

“As the capital city of the state with the most HBCUs in the entire U.S., Montgomery is the ideal location to showcase HBCU culture with this action-packed weekend,” said Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed.

“We’re proud to welcome alumni and fans home to celebrate our shared history, passion and pride by experiencing all our city has to offer.”

The best of HBCU traditions will be on display during HBCU Classic Weekend, including pep-rallies, football games, marching bands, tailgating, enriching panel discussions, networking events, concerts featuring renowned artists and more. Highlights of the weekend include:

* Night at the Museum – Monday, August 28 from 5-8 PM
* Special late-night hours at local museums
* Minority Business Mixer at The Lab on Dexter - Tuesday, August 29
* HBCU and Greek Mixer at 23 Court Cigar Bar – Wednesday, August 30
* Afterglow Concert Series at Riverwalk Amphitheatre – Thursday, August 31 – Saturday, September 2
* HBCU Golf Tournament at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail – Capitol Hill – Thursday, August 31
* Southern Soul and Blues Lovers Festival at Montgomery Performing Arts Center – September 1
* Alabama State University’s President’s Gala – Saturday, September 1
