More Housing Options for AAMU Students as University Grows

Expanded Housing Creates Room, Solutions for More AAMU Students
The 2023-24 academic year is off to an exciting start at Alabama A&M University. Officials say the momentum surrounding the University is something the entire community can be proud of.

“We are excited about all our growth points, especially during a time when students are losing confidence in higher education,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Braque Talley.

According to a recent Gallup poll, confidence in higher education has dropped to 36 percent from 57 percent in 2015. Talley says AAMU is not part of that trend, as the University continues to expand. Along with growth, comes the need for expanded support for students. According to the National Center for Education Statistic’s most recent National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, just 38 percent of students at U.S. public colleges and universities live in campus-managed housing. Alabama A&M accommodates well-above that number.

“We provided housing accommodations for 50 percent of our students two years ago,” said Talley. “That number is now up to 62 percent.

This growth includes more than a $10 million investment alone in securing off-campus spaces for students and increasing on-campus housing capacity.”

The housing process for AAMU students opens in March, with spaces reserved for new and returning students. Those who submit their housing application and the requisite support items, are assigned housing first.

“All students who applied for housing prior to July 15, 2023 have been assigned housing,” said Talley. “We press upon our students the importance of doing things in a timely manner and as housing is limited, we cannot reserve spaces in hopes that students will apply for housing late.”

The Division of Academic Affairs is also making adjustments to support all learners as the year begins. The following strategies will be employed to allow all students to participate in instruction regardless of housing accommodations:

  • All courses are supported by the Learning Management System (Blackboard)
  • 120 of classrooms are equipped with instructional technology to accommodate in-class and online participation, simultaneously if needed
  • Adding additional online course options in general education for students in transition
  • Faculty will accommodate students on a case-by-case basis leveraging available instructional technology.
