Posted By: S. Moore on August 23, 2023 New President Dr. Tomikia P. LeGrande Takes the Helm at Prairie View A&M University This week, Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) welcomes its new president, Dr. Tomikia P. LeGrande. As the successor to the esteemed Dr. Ruth Simmons, Dr. LeGrande is ready to lead the historically Black university into a new era of success and growth. A Legacy of Excellence Dr. Ruth Simmons, the outgoing president, made history as the first Black American to serve as president of an Ivy League school at Brown University and the first woman president of PVAMU. Dr. LeGrande sees this legacy as a source of inspiration rather than intimidation. She plans to build upon the rich history of PVAMU and use her skills to propel the university towards even greater success. Dr. LeGrande recognizes the importance of HBCUs and their role in providing access and opportunity to African Americans. She believes that PVAMU, with its strong sense of Panther Pride, is the perfect place to continue this legacy. A Leader with a Vision Before assuming her role as president of PVAMU, Dr. LeGrande served as vice president for strategy, enrollment management, and student success at Virginia Commonwealth University. With her experience and expertise in higher education administration and leadership, she is well-equipped to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. One of the immediate challenges for Dr. LeGrande is ensuring that there is enough housing for the growing number of students at PVAMU. Additionally, she will focus on addressing faculty needs and securing funding, which are ongoing battles for HBCUs. Prioritizing Success Dr. LeGrande understands that it is essential to prioritize initiatives and projects to ensure long-term success. She acknowledges that it is impossible to do everything at once but remains committed to making strategic decisions that will benefit the university and its students. Navigating a Changing Educational Landscape The educational realm has experienced significant changes in recent months, both at the state and national level. ABC13 asked Dr. LeGrande about the potential impact of Governor Greg Abbott’s decision to end diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in Texas schools and the Supreme Court’s ruling against affirmative action. Dr. LeGrande emphasized that while PVAMU may not have offices specifically dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the university has always had programs and services designed to meet the needs of its diverse student body. These programs will continue to be open to all students, ensuring that PVAMU remains an inclusive and supportive institution. A Fresh Perspective Dr. LeGrande brings a fresh perspective to PVAMU. Born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, she values southern hospitality and believes in the power of live music and good food. As a two-time HBCU graduate herself, she understands the unique experiences and challenges faced by students at PVAMU. Dr. LeGrande wants every first-time PVAMU student to know that she is right there with them on their first day. She plans to start her presidency alongside the incoming freshmen class, emphasizing her commitment to their success and well-being. Engaging Alumni for Continued Success Another goal of Dr. LeGrande is to tap into the vast network of PVAMU alumni. Many alumni have gone on to achieve great things and can contribute not only through donations but also by sharing their time, talent, and treasure with the university. Dr. LeGrande believes that by engaging alumni, PVAMU can continue to thrive and provide valuable opportunities for its students. A Research Powerhouse PVAMU is proud to be one of only 10 HBCUs in the nation designated as a research-two institution. This recognition highlights the university’s commitment to excellence in research and innovation. As Dr. Tomikia P. LeGrande takes the helm at Prairie View A&M University, she brings with her a vision for success and a dedication to the university’s mission. With her leadership, PVAMU is poised to continue its legacy of providing access and opportunity to students while achieving new heights of academic excellence.
