An HBCU ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition is coming to Charlotte. Here’s how to see it

Moore on August 30, 2023 Historically Black colleges and universities are known for their electrifying marching bands, and you’ll have a chance to see some of them perform live in Charlotte on Labor Day weekend. The 2023 Charlotte HBCU Labor Day Classic: Battle of the Bands lineup includes bands from Bethune-Cookman, North Carolina Central; South Carolina State; Benedict College; Talladega College; Central State; Winston Salem State; Virginia State; and Stillman College. Members of North Carolina Central University Marching Sound Machine practice Tuesday evening, September 21, 2010, at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium. The marching band has been selected to participate in the 2011 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. “Prepare to be moved by the raw energy and passion that define HBCU marching bands,” the event’s page states. “Don’t miss out on this extraordinary weekend that celebrates the essence and excellence of HBCUs.” Before the main event, attendees can enjoy the 2023 HBCU Labor Day Classic Fan Fest FanFest with food trucks, vendors, live high school band performances, and more. The event will be held at Memorial Stadium, 218-1238 Armory Dr., on Sunday. The FanFest lasts from 12-4 p.m., and the Battle of the Bands begins at 5 p.m. Ticket prices range from $20-$200 and can be purchased at eventbrite.com.
