Bethune-Cookman University Again Ranks Among Highest Private Schools In Florida For Social Mobility

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on September 21, 2023 Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) is living up to one of its founders’ driving principles: “Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve.” For the second consecutive year, B-CU was recognized as one of U.S. News & World Report’s top performing private schools in Florida on the Social Mobility Index, which gauges the economic trajectory of students after graduation. “This recent report reinforces how serious B-CU is about giving a return on taxpayers’ investment of the federal Pell Grant,” said Anthony Jones, Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Experience. “Over 80% of our enrolled students receive some form of financial aid, and of those, approximately 80% have been awarded Pell Grants. Not only do students earn a degree, but they’re also given the tools needed to achieve the American dream and contribute to the global economy.” The new rankings from U.S. News & World Report also saw B-CU jump six places to number 43 among all HBCUs. About Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) Mary McLeod Bethune founded the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls in 1904. In 1923, it became a co-ed high school as a result of a merger with Cookman Institute of Jacksonville, Fla. One year later, the school became affiliated with the United Methodist Church, evolved into a junior college by 1931 and became known as Bethune-Cookman College. In 1941, the Florida State Department of Education approved a four-year baccalaureate program offering liberal arts and teacher education.
