NCCU Women’s Golf Wins Thomas W. Dortch Jr. HBCU Classic
Posted By: S. Moore on September 27, 2023

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. – Junior Trinity Ahing and freshman Tatum Thompson shared co-medalist honors to lead the North Carolina Central University women's golf team to the team victory at the 38th annual Thomas W. Dortch Jr. HBCU Classic contested at Eagle's Landing Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.

The Eagles defeated Chicago State University by 20 shots and University of Maryland Eastern Shore by 53 shots to claim its second team multi-team title over NCCU's first three seasons competing in women's golf.

Ahing continued her consistent play in her first season representing the maroon and gray, firing rounds of 74 and 75 on the 5,851-yard, par-72 layout at Eagle's Landing. Ahing's first five rounds of the fall have all been between 72 and 76.

Thompson matched Ahing's five-over, 36-hole total of 149 with scorecards of 76 and 73.

Thompson's 73 is a new collegiate low round for the rookie and NCCU's lowest round of the two-day event hosted by the Black College Golf Coaches Association in conjunction with National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc.

Ahing and Thompson were at least eight strokes clear of every other competitor in the 15-play field.

All five Eagles secured top-10 results with sophomore Sidney Renville (80-86—166) placing eighth overall while freshman Cailynn Winford (82-86—168) and redshirt senior Jalea Culliver (79-89—168) tying for ninth place. Renville, Winford and Culliver all supplied 18-hole scores that counted towards NCCU's team triumph.

Culliver made the only eagle in the women's tournament. Thompson and Ahing led the field with eight and seven birdies, respectively.

NC Central is next scheduled to compete in the UNCG Collegiate at Forest Oaks Golf Club on Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 9-10.

NC Central Individual Results (15 Golfers)
T-1. Tatum Thompson (76-73—149)

8. Sidney Renville (80-86—166)
