Posted By: S. Moore on October 19, 2023 The North Carolina A&T bowling team is not shy about its ambitions. The fourth-ranked team in the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) top-25 poll wants passionately to win the 2024 NCAA national championship. The Aggies got off to a good start toward that goal during their season-opening tournament by winning the 2023 Colonial Classic hosted by Tulane University at Colonial Lanes. A&T dominated Baker format bracket play on Sunday to win the tournament with an 11-2 record and a total pinfall of 14,096. The Aggies averaged 210.4 per game over 67 games during the three-day tournament. "This weekend was one to remember," said A&T graduate bowler Lauren Tomaszewski, who bowled the program's second perfect 300 game in eight months on Saturday. "I am excited to see how much better we get as the season continues and that we use this weekend's win to help propel us on our journey to a national championship." Tomaszewski's 300 game and her fourth-place finish during traditional play with a 1,098 total pinfall helped her win all-tournament honors. Senior teammate Melanie Katen, who placed third with a 1,101 total pinfall, also earned all-tournament honors. The Aggies started Sunday's bracket play as the No. 1 seed. They faced off against No. Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs came into Sunday's action 10-0 after defeating the Aggies in Baker format on Friday. But the Aggies got off to a fast start against the La Tech. A&T won the first three games by a combined 626-542. La Tech recovered in the fourth and fifth games to beat A&T 205-183 and 220-212. But A&T returned to its stellar play and defeated the Bulldogs 238-193 to win the best-of-seven Baker format, 4-2. The Aggies had a total pinfall of 1,259 to the Bulldogs' 1,160. The Aggies advanced to face Jackson State, where they did not start as torrid. The Tigers beat the Aggies in Game 1, 216-165. But the Aggies rebounded to defeat Jackson 210-151. The Aggies won the next three games by a combined 643-496 to win the series 4-1. A&T had a total pinfall of 1,018 to Jackson's 863 as the Aggies advanced to play La Tech for the third time in the tournament to decide the 2023 Colonial Classic champion. The Aggies looked terrific in Game 1, defeating the Bulldogs 258-202. La Tech evened the series with a 255-246 win in Game 2. The Aggies edged La Tech 200-196 in the third contest and had a slim 184-174 win in Game 4 to take a 3-1 lead. The Bulldogs stayed alive with a 210-170 win before the Aggies claimed the trophy by winning Game 6, 247-182. The Aggies had an incredible 1,305 total pinfall against a solid La Tech team to win the series 4-2. La Tech, a team the Aggies could face in the NCAA tournament, finished with a total pinfall of 1,219. A&T's season continues Nov. 3-6 when the Aggies participate in the Sam Houston Kat Klash in Houston, Texas.
