HBCUgrow 2023 LEAD Conference Speakers Announced

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on November 13, 2023 HBCUgrow today announced the lineup of speakers for the 2023 LEAD Conference, taking place as part of The December 1st Triumph Project, a week-long event celebrating the HBCU legacy. This year’s Conference is scheduled for December 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the iconic Estey Hall Auditorium on the campus of Shaw University in Raleigh. The theme is Turning Obstacles into Opportunities. Speakers will address student mental health and growing belonging on campuses, opportunities for HBCUs (and their students) to fill talent pipelines in the Space industry and beyond, how universities can build training and workforce capacity in AI/ML and apply it to improve student and community health.. There will also be networking opportunities for HBCU leaders and students. The agenda follows: Agenda 9:30 a.m. Registration 10:00 a.m. Student Mental Health: Redefining Belonging on College Campuses, Dr. Mona Nour, LCMHC While college can be an exciting time to explore a sense of self, many students contend with barriers to interconnectedness. Factors such as academic anxiety and social isolation can leave students feeling disconnected from their colleagues and the campus at-large. Dr. Nour will share practical steps that colleges can take to create four types of belonging that help students feel seen, embraced, and celebrated. 11:00 a.m. Fly to the Future, Greg Fasking, Executive VP and CMO, US Space & Rocket Center (USSRC) Mr. Fasking will share paths open to students and universities to help fill pipelines with skilled workers for the Space Industry and beyond. Learn how your HBCU can partner with the Space industry to meet future needs. 12:00 noon Lunch & Keynote: Building AI/ML Capacity at HBCUs, Dr. Alex Carlisle, CEO of the National Alliance Against Disparities in Patient Health (NADPH) Dr. Carlisle shares ways HBCUs can gain access to a world class ecosystem of scientific research, health professionals, and technology to help eliminate health disparities. 1:00 p.m. Meet the Presidential Panel From ARPA funds to AI to political challenges, learn how our panelists (including HBCU presidents and chancellors) are finding ways to go over, around, or through obstacles facing their organizations. 2:30 p.m. Peer Breakout Groups Attendees can take a deeper dive and network with colleagues and some of our speakers.
