Wisdom Martin, Get Up DC Anchor, Visits The University of The District of Columbia

Wisdom Martin, Get Up DC Anchor, Visits The University of The District of Columbia
Posted By: Sasha Windsor on December 07, 2023

Wisdom Martin serves as the co-anchor for the WUSA 9 morning show "Get Up DC" from 4 am to 7 am on weekdays. Prior to this role, he held the position of anchor at FOX 5 DC morning news and was the host of "Good Day DC" for a remarkable span of 20 years. A distinguished alumnus of Jackson State University, Wisdom has an extensive career covering both sports and news in various locations, including Jackson, Mississippi (WAPT), California (KSEE), North Carolina (WRAL), Nashville (WKRN), and at CNN in Atlanta, Georgia.

Additionally, Wisdom has showcased his versatility by hosting the podcast titled "The Unconventional Wisdom." Furthermore, he is an accomplished author, having penned "Pass Interference: The History of the Black Quarterback in the NFL." In addition to this notable work, Wisdom has authored two more books, namely "Conventional Wisdom" Volumes 1 and 2.

Wisdom Martin dedicated thoughtful contemplation to the profound influence historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have wielded over both America and his familial heritage. In the deliberation about the choice of academic institution, Wisdom emphatically underscored Jackson State University as a cherished familial preference. He revealed that, akin to himself, his parents, and grandparents, a notable cohort of 6 or 7 cousins, brother, uncles and aunts had all pursued education at Jackson State University. Furthermore, Wisdom disclosed that his wife had also engaged in summer school studies at the esteemed institution.

Beyond his personal family connections with the university, Wisdom Martin is intimately acquainted with the pursuit of higher education, a value instilled by his parents who were themselves educators. Wisdom expressed that the self-assurance he gained became evident through his own experience when he secured his inaugural television job during his sophomore year.

Wisdom addressed the audience comprised of students and faculty, delivering insightful information, and providing words of encouragement. My personal favorite is “If you’re determined and have a game plan, you can have anything you want. Wisdom recounted a narrative to provide the audience with a deeper understanding of the considerable effort he invested during the initial phases of his career. Despite enduring the discomfort of a broken hand, Wisdom conveyed that he shook hands with the interviewer during his first media interview, underscoring his dedication and determination. Wisdom drove his point home with reminding the audience that “you have to want it more than the next person.

In terms of a strong work ethic, Wisdom is well-acquainted with the value of hard work. To shed light on his personal journey, Wisdom shared several anecdotes with the audience. While encouraging everyone to “outwork everyone you encounter”, He recounted numerous instances of late nights, early mornings, and missed football games, emphasizing the sacrifices he made. Notably, he mentioned working for minimum wage to acquire valuable experience that would serve as a foundation for future opportunities. In drawing inspiration, Wisdom referenced the late Kobe Bryant, highlighting Kobe's dedication to honing his skills in the gym while others were socializing in clubs, underscoring the commitment required for greatness.
