Bridge Builder Classic: A Celebration of Local Talent and HBCU Hoops in Alabama

Bridge Builder Classic: A Celebration of Local Talent and HBCU Hoops in Alabama
Posted By: S. Moore on January 16, 2024

At the crack of dawn on January 15, 2024, basketball enthusiasts converged at the Mitchell Center at the University of South Alabama, for the third annual Bridge Builder Classic. This unique event held a promising day of riveting basketball showcase between historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and local high schools in Alabama.

High School Talent on Display
Before the main stage was set for the HBCUs, the spotlight fell on four local high schools — Mattie T. Blount, John L. LeFlore, Williamson, and B.C. Rain. The energy in the center amplified as the first girls’ game in the history of the classic kicked off. In a riveting match, Mattie T. Blount emerged victorious against John L. LeFlore with a score of 63 to 50. Despite the defeat, LeFlore didn’t return empty-handed, securing the spirit trophy. The boys’ game followed with an equally thrilling performance, where Williamson outshined B.C. Rain, clinching a win with a score of 48 to 40.

HBCU Showdown
Moving on from the high school games, the stage was set for a face-off between two prominent HBCUs — the Alabama State Hornets and the Alabama A&M Bulldogs. The stakes were high, the tension palpable, as fans eagerly awaited the showdown between these powerhouse teams.

More Than Just a Game
Yet, the Bridge Builder Classic was more than just a series of basketball games. It was a platform for nurturing and exposing local talent. University recruiters were present, keenly observing the high school athletes, evaluating their potential for possible recruitment. The event was also an avenue for celebrating the HBCU community and the undying spirit of local sportsmanship, punctuated by band performances, a drumline battle, and a live performance by Crime Mob — a testament to the electrifying atmosphere that pervaded the Mitchell Center.
