Posted By: S. Moore on January 16, 2024 TUSKEGEE, Ala. – The Tuskegee University athletic community is mourning the passing of Fred Ellis, a former student-athlete and offensive line coach, who died on Monday. Head coach Aaron James, Ellis’s teammate at Tuskegee, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. “Fred was a vital part of our program, both as a player and a coach. His passing brings immense sadness to our university and team. We extend our heartfelt thoughts to his family and loved ones, as he will be profoundly missed,” James said. Ellis had a distinguished career in coaching, joining the Golden Tigers’ staff as the offensive line coach after the 2021 season. His tenure at Tuskegee was marked by significant achievements, including a 15-7 record over two years, a 2023 SIAC Football Championship game appearance, and impressive rushing yard averages in both seasons. Before his time at Tuskegee, Ellis contributed significantly to the Miles College football program. He initially joined Miles in 2011, focusing on the offensive line and leading the team to two Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships. During his time there, Miles College saw 10 All-SIAC selections, including standout player Terrance Owens. Ellis’s coaching career began in 2008 at Jackson State, where he coached tight ends. He then moved to Stillman College, coaching the offensive line and contributing to the success of future NFL running back Quinn Porter. As a player, Ellis was a formidable presence on the offensive line for Tuskegee, earning All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors twice, with a First Team selection in 2000 and a Second Team selection in 2001.
