The YMCA of Central Ohio invites area youth (4-18) to express and explore our theme, “We Rise Together” and Dr. King’s quote from the Letter from Birmingham Jail (see below) through the creation of art pieces that communicate their unique point of view. Theme: “We Rise Together” “In a real sense all life is interrelated. All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be… This is the inter-related structure of reality.” ― Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from Birmingham Jail: Martin Luther King Jr.'s Letter from Birmingham Jail and the Struggle That Changed a Nation: Library Edition Through his words, King suggests that only the people directly affected by any sort of injustice can protest against it – he reasons that as human beings, we are all tied to one another, and what affects one community has the potential of affecting many others.
