Lincoln University Investigation Opens After Dr. Bailey's Loss

Lincoln University Investigation Opens After Dr. Bailey
Posted By: S. Moore on January 22, 2024

The firm’s comprehensive review will begin this week and should be completed within the coming weeks, said in a statement released Thursday afternoon.

Lincoln University’s Board of Curators have selected Lewis Rice Higher Education Practice Group to lead the independent investigation into the university’s administrative practices, amid Dr. John Moseley’s decision to temporarily step down, following the death of Dr. Bonnie Bailey on January 8th.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, the Board stated: “Lincoln University’s Board of Curators has engaged a team of attorneys led by Ronald Norwood and Jerina Phillips in the Higher Education Practice Group of Lewis Rice to conduct an independent review of recent issues raised regarding compliance with the University’s established policies and procedures.”

The Board of Curators selected Lewis Rice after reviewing proposals from a number of qualified firms. Lewis Rice’s Higher Education Practice Group has extensive experience in representing and advising colleges and universities.

The review will examine Lincoln University’s management of “personnel issues and address any relevant concerns associated with the allegations of Dr. Antoinette “Bonnie” Candia-Bailey,” the BOC stated. The firm’s comprehensive review will begin this week and should be completed within the coming weeks – allowing time for a full investigation.

As we previously reported, Dr. Antoinette “Bonnie” Candia-Bailey sadly passed away on January 8th. Family officially confirmed Dr. Bailey died by suicide due to distress from “bullying and severe mistreatment” in her role as VP of Student Affairs at Lincoln University Missouri.

Sources state that Dr. Bailey was left “unsupported, disregarded, and abused after countless attempts to speak out on the bullying and harassment she experienced in her role from President Moseley.” Dr. Bailey also reportedly discussed in a letter before her passing, the “stigmatized bullying she faced from the President and other leadership officials,” after disclosing her mental illness to the university.

“As a Board, we are focused on having an independent expert promptly examine all of the facts so that we can take appropriate steps,” said Board of Curators President Victor Pasley. “…we want to prioritize the mental health of everyone here and make sure each employee and student is treated with dignity and respect.”

President Victor Pasley also noted that “confidentiality constraints prevent the Board and University leaders from commenting on specific personnel information,” However, “regular updates on the progress of the review” will be provided to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the process.

Dr. John B. Moseley has volunteered to be placed on paid, administrative leave while a review is conducted. Dr. Stevie Lawrence II, currently Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Lincoln University, will serve as Acting President during the review process.

We continue to keep Dr. Bailey’s family, friends, and Jefferson community in our thoughts and prayers during this time.
