Hampton Sailing Begins Spring Schedule With Third Place Finish at Peter Wenner Rainbow Invite
|
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on January 29, 2024 Hampton University Sailing competed in their first event of the spring season at the Peter Wenner Rainbow Invite. The Pirates placed third out of the 16-team field. HU would finish above Victoria, Arizona State, UCLA, Cal Poly, British Columbia, California, UC San Diego, UC Davis, and Rutgers. Coach Alessandro Ambrosi's squad finished the regatta with a total of 91 points finishing behind two of Hawaii's teams. Hampton's B unit had an excellent showing with 35 points. HU and Victoria would be the only teams outside of UH to crack the top five. The Pirates B unit won three races along with seven top-five finishes. Their lowest finish would be seventh, which came in the 10th race of the regatta. While Hampton's A squad struggled early, they would win the sixth race and produced back-to-back top-three finishes. HU for most of the second day sat in second place. With Hawaii's Wahine team taking consecutive races, UH jumped the Pirates in the standing. Hampton's sailing team will be back in action on March 23rd at the Hanbury Trophy hosted by Christopher Newport.
