A special event, hosted by University President Quinton T. Ross, Jr., will take place on Feb. 1 (Thursday) to open the 50 year-old Alabama State University time capsule, which was created and sealed in 1974 after being stocked with various ASU items representative of the times. The event will take place on the University's Academic Mall, located near North University Drive, beginning at 11 a.m., explained Jessica Madison, executive director of ASU's office of Strategic Communications and Marketing.

"We are excited, at the University, to host this special time capsule in-person ceremony as part of our two-day Founders' Week events. We will have speakers and music, and the actual opening of the capsule that will allow students and the public to look at the remnants of Alabama State's history from the year 1974," Madison said.

"We send a special invitation to all of ASU's students, members of the Hornet Nation family, the public and the news media to be with us at this exciting event and see the actual contents of the capsule, which will help all better understand the importance of a 50-year look at how history was made at ASU during that time."

STUDENTS ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND
Madison explained that the event is scheduled between the hours of 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. when no classes are held on campus, so students may attend.

She also stated that legendary ASU coach, Larry Watkins, who was head baseball coach for 30 years and is a member of the SWAC Baseball Hall of Fame, will join Dr. Ross in speaking at the ceremony.

"This special ASU historical event will help students and others better understand what campus life was like 50 years ago, and will shine a light on that moment of time and contrast it with the phenomenal growth of Alabama State University and how far it has advanced since the mid-1970s," Madison added.

Madison further explained that the University's Founders' Week also includes the traditional Founders' Week Convocation, beginning at 10 a.m. on Feb. 2 (Friday) in the ASU Dunn-Oliver Acadome with keynote speaker, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin.

Both events are free and open to the public. The University’s "clear-bag" policy is in effect at the Convocation.
For those unable to attend the Convocation in-person, the event will be live-streamed.
