Jackson State On The Hook With $800K Bill After Deion Pulls Out of Classic
|
Posted By: S. Moore on February 23, 2024 Issue came when the former coach ended historic rivalry with Tennessee State Deion Sanders, the former head coach of Jackson State University's football team, left the school after the 2022 season, during which the team achieved a remarkable 12-1 record. However, his departure left the university with a significant financial burden as a result of a decision he made during his time in charge of the football team. n 2022, Sanders made the decision to withdraw the Jackson State Tigers from their annual Southern Heritage Classic game against Tennessee State. This was a historic matchup between two Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) held on neutral ground in Memphis. This decision was made three years into a five-year contract with Summit Management Corporation, the organization responsible for organizing the event, with Sanders' move actually causing a breach of the aforementioned agreement. Why did Sanders cancel the game? Sanders cited financial reasons for the withdrawal, explaining that the costs associated with the game, including transportation, accommodations, and meals for the team and administration, were unsustainable for the university. However, this decision led to a legal dispute with Summit Management Corporation, which sued Jackson State for $1.8 million in lost earnings. After legal proceedings, Jackson State settled the lawsuit for $800,000. This settlement, reached around November of 2022, has only recently come to light, nearly a year and a half later. The university is now responsible for paying this significant bill, despite Sanders having left the school two years prior. At the time of the decision, it was financially prudent for Jackson State to withdraw from the Southern Heritage Classic, as the university was barely breaking even on the event. However, the circumstances have changed, and the financial consequences of Sanders' decision are now being felt, with it likely to cost even more than if the matches had gone ahead as agreed.
