The 2024 University Commencement Keynote Speaker Exelon CEO Calvin Butler to Headline Graduation Ceremony

The 2024 University Commencement Keynote Speaker Exelon CEO Calvin Butler to Headline Graduation Ceremony
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on February 29, 2024

On Friday, May 10, Delaware State University will host Exelon President and CEO Calvin Butler as the keynote speaker during its 8 a.m. Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony on the main campus.

As President and CEO of Exelon, Mr. Butler oversees the company’s six electric and natural gas companies – Atlantic City Electric (ACE), Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE), ComEd, Delmarva Power (DPL), PECO, and Pepco.

Exelon is the nation’s largest utility company by customer count, serving approximately 10 million customers in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Exelon, vis-ŕ-vis its Delmarva subsidiary, is the longest-standing corporate partner at the University and worked with the University to establish its first Renewable Energy Center in 2017. It currently provides five full scholarships to deserving students through its Power Scholars program and supports several other initiatives at the University.

“It is an honor and a privilege to deliver the keynote address at Delaware State University, one of the state’s most important educational institutions and brightest lights,” Mr. Butler said. “At Exelon, we are committed to putting equity in energy and powering the future through collaborations with HBCUs – institutions that teach and nurture the students who will be the future leaders in our industry and communities. Our partnership with Dr.

Allen and the entire DSU team – to provide scholarships, training, workforce development and recruitment programs – is an investment that will lead to sustainable growth and meaningful impact for years to come.”

Mr. Butler has been the Exelon President and CEO since Dec. 31, 2022, and is one of only eight African American CEOs among Fortune 500 companies. His corporate rise has been highlighted by numerous honors, including being named on The Daily Record’s “Power 100” list and as one of its 35 “Influential Marylanders” and a three-time “Most Admired CEO.” He has also been recognized by Enterprise magazine as one of the “Most Influential Black Executives in Corporate America.” Baltimore magazine has also named him one of its “Top Ten Baltimoreans.” Mr. Butler is an active Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. member.

University President Tony Allen said, “Calvin is an extraordinary leader and believes strongly in using the very best of Exelon’s expertise in energy to build a healthy, livable future for our country. Because of his authentic style and commitment to real results for real people, the company represents the grand diversity of the customers and clients it serves and delivers strong value in an increasingly complex spectrum of energy opportunities for us all. Given what we expect to be the largest graduation in the University’s history, we could not be more proud to have him setting the 2024 graduating class on fire this year.”
