Four Atlanta HBCUs Receive $14 Million Grant From National Science Foundation

Moore on March 19, 2024 The Growing Research Access for Nationally Transformative Equity and Diversity initiative of the National Science Foundation has awarded a $14 million grant to Four Historically Black Colleges & Universities, (one historically Black medical school) in Atlanta, GA. The four Atlanta, Georgia-based historically Black institutions: Spelman College, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Clark Atlanta University are members of the Atlanta University Center, the world’s largest consortium of HBCUs. The grant, which researchers at Spelman College will lead, aims to synergistically expand the research support and service capacity across the Atlanta University Center. The project will establish a new Office for Research and Technology Commercialization which will serve as a model for other HBCUs and research institutions. “The NSF funding will have a significant and long-lasting impact on strengthening the research support infrastructure within the AUC,” said Spelman College president Helene Gayle. “It will provide the opportunity to advance knowledge and thought leadership and spur innovation and entrepreneurship. It will also enable Spelman and the collaborating AUC institutions to increase their role in the growth of the state’s economy.” The AUC will establish a research hub to promote equity and serve as a model for other HBCUs and emerging research institutions.
