Struggling to Bridge the Financial Gap: My Journey as an International Student at Fisk University

Struggling to Bridge the Financial Gap: My Journey as an International Student at Fisk University
Posted By: Iyinloluwa Kareem on April 29, 2024

Hey everyone, my name is Kareem Iyinloluwa Righteous, and I'm an international student from Nigeria. First off, let me clarify – the profile picture on this post is not mine, I'm a guy! 😂

I recently received admission to Fisk University with the Ella Shepherd Moore Provost Scholarship, covering full tuition. However, there's still a financial gap of $15,580, which is exactly equivalent to 19,977,406.00 Naira today. In Nigeria, this amount is incredibly difficult to come by.

My parents were incredibly supportive and tried their best to help me fulfill my dream of studying at Fisk. They reached out to friends for assistance, but unfortunately, everyone bailed, leaving my entire family devastated.

Desperate for a solution, I reached out to Fisk, proposing a "bond" where they could keep my certificate until I could gather the funds. However, their response shattered our hopes – they couldn't offer any additional assistance, stating that my scholarship is final.

I was under the impression that HBCU schools like Fisk would provide support to students like me, especially considering my background as a black student from Nigeria. Despite scoring a 1440 on the SAT, just shy of the 1500 threshold for additional aid, I still found myself in need of help.

This journey has been challenging, but I'm determined to overcome these obstacles and pursue my education. I'm sharing my story in hopes of shedding light on the struggles international students face and advocating for more support within the HBCU community.
