Alabama State University President, Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr., hosted a news conference on May 2 with executives from Genesis Motor America (GMA) announcing a substantial donation of $50,000. Then funds will help launch the University's Mechanical Engineering program, which begins in the fall 2024 semester.

The event was held at the corner of North University Drive and Harris Way with speakers including President Ross; executives from GMA; Robert Burns, the chief administrative officer and vice president of Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, LLC (HMMA); and ASU's vice president for Institutional Advancement, Colonel (ret.) Gregory Clark. Also in attendance were such ASU luminaries as members of the Board of Trustees - President Brenda Brown Dillard, Pro-Tem Delbert Madison and Judge Tiffany McCord - as well as ASU's Provost and vice president of Academic Affairs. Dr. Carl S. Pettis.

ASU's President explained that Genesis Motor America's contribution will provide the University with resources and opportunities that will advance excellence for ASU students involved in studying and majoring in the University’s new mechanical engineering program.

"Our partnership with HMMA and GMA, along with this transformative inaugural gift of $50,000 for student scholarships from GMA's 'Genesis Gives' program, will allow students to receive needed resources to become mechanical engineers in our new Mechanical Engineering program," said President Ross.

ABOUT THE NEW PROGRAM
The Mechanical Engineering program at ASU is poised to provide students with comprehensive academic and hands-on experiences, preparing them for successful careers in the field. The support from GMA will enable the program to offer state-of-the-art facilities, advanced technological resources, and valuable industry connections.

HMMA's Robert Burns shared that this is a "win-win" opportunity both to advance ASU's students academically and to keep good jobs in Alabama where his company manufactures several different vehicles.

"Our partnership with ASU has taken place over many years and began in earnest during the COVID-19 Pandemic when ASU both provided testing for our employees and vaccinations to help us combat the disease at our plant. Today's announcement of our GMA's donation to the University only reinforces our commitment to both Alabama State University and our support of STEM education," Burns said.
