$400,000 Raised During 2nd Coppin State University Gala

$400,000 Raised During 2nd Coppin State University Gala
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on May 13, 2024

Dressed in their finest attire, over 750 guests were treated to an incredible display of elegance and generosity at the second annual gala hosted by Coppin State University. The event at the prestigious Baltimore Marriott Waterfront surpassed all expectations, raising record-breaking support from alumni, faculty members, philanthropists, community leaders, and friends.

The evening began with a VIP reception, where guests mingled and enjoyed the musical musings of saxophonist, Phillip "Doc" Martin. Once in the main ballroom, guests were treated to a gourmet dinner, followed by the main event – a series of inspirational speeches highlighting Coppin’s transformative impact. Students and supporters hailed the university for staying true to its mission to nurture potential and transform lives through education, fulfilling its responsibilities as an anchor institution in Baltimore, and reinforcing its status as a leader in urban higher education.

“Your presence represents your belief in Coppin State, our mission, and our unwavering commitment to transforming lives. Individually and collectively, you understood the assignment, and for that I am grateful. Tonight is bigger than a good meal and looking great (and yes you look great). But tonight is about impact, legacy, and a commitment to Do More and help someone BE MORE,” Coppin State University President Anthony L. Jenkins told the crowd.

The culmination of the gala is the $400,000 raised, which will underwrite scholars throughout their educational journey and equip them with tools and experiences needed to prepare them for the workforce, and life, including scholarships, internships, and study abroad opportunities, enhanced academic programming, and research funding. Funds raised will also support Coppin State athletics and community outreach efforts.

“The galas are important fundraising and cultivation achievements. [And] a testament to Coppin’s value as an institution that produces some of our nation's most thoughtful, intelligent leaders - leaders ready to take on our greatest challenges to BE MORE,” said Joshua Humbert, vice president of institutional advancement.

Emotions ran high as dedicated alumni and strong corporate partners were recognized and honored for their important pivotal role in educating multicultural, multigenerational students from various socioeconomic backgrounds, and to the institution.

Brian D. Pieninck, President and Chief Executive Officer of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield received the Blue and Gold Impact Award, which recognizes a corporation or business that has created a culture of philanthropy.

The organization has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to Coppin State University through its financial support, leadership involvement, volunteer participation, and serves as a role model for other businesses in our community and nationwide.

Carim V. Khouzami, President and Chief Executive Officer at Baltimore Gas & Electric received the Wings of Excellence Award. This recognition celebrates either a corporation or an individual who has fostered a culture of philanthropy by advancing innovative solutions and achieving significant advancements within the community. This honor is bestowed upon those who have shown exceptional dedication to Coppin State University through their leadership, financial contributions, volunteerism, and their broader impact on the region.

Joseph H. Lewis (‘72) received the Eagle Legacy Award, which acknowledges the cumulative efforts of an individual who, spanning ten or more years, exemplifies exceptional civic and charitable responsibility. His generosity not only inspires but also fosters leadership within the Coppin State University community.

Dr. Tammira Lucas (‘09) received the Eagle of the Year award which recognizes the outstanding achievements of Coppin State University graduates who have made an important contribution to Coppin State University and the local, national, or international community through their achievements. Dr. Lucas is the founder of The Cube, Cowork, the largest Black woman-owned coworking space in the United States that provides babysitting services.

As the night ended, guests departed joyfully, knowing their contributions profoundly impacts the lives of students pursuing their academic dreams. The staggering success of the 2024 gala serves as an exemplary example of the power of community, philanthropy, and education aligning to create brighter futures.
