INAUGURAL HBCU PRESIDENTS CLASSIC: A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

INAUGURAL HBCU PRESIDENTS CLASSIC: A RESOUNDING SUCCESS
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 04, 2024

The inaugural "HBCU Presidents Classic," hosted by the Defender Network, celebrated Black excellence and HBCU pride, focusing on Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) and Texas Southern University (TSU). The event featured a dynamic dialogue moderated by Laura Onyeneho, where Dr. Ruth Simmons of PVAMU and Dr. Lesia Crumpton-Young of TSU discussed college funding, alumni engagement, new programs, and institutional futures.

Dr. Crumpton-Young highlighted TSU's innovative approach with the new College of Transdisciplinary Studies, aiming to serve students with prior college credits and work experience. This initiative has already garnered significant interest, reflecting a broader commitment to inclusivity and educational access.

Dr. Simmons emphasized PVAMU's focus on enhancing academic quality, faculty excellence, and student opportunities, aiming to provide a wide array of experiences typically available to students nationwide.

She underscored partnerships, international experiences, and the development of a broad liberal arts education to empower students.

Both presidents underscored the critical role of alumni engagement in advancing their institutions. Dr. Crumpton-Young highlighted record alumni support and initiatives like enhancing internships and scholarships. Dr. Simmons urged alumni to invest in future generations, challenging them to prioritize contributions to institutional growth over personal indulgences.

Regarding corporate funding, Dr. Simmons and Dr. Crumpton-Young expressed a shift in approach, advocating for dignified partnerships that respect the value and contributions of HBCUs. They emphasized the need for equitable funding and advocacy similar to that enjoyed by other institutions.

The event highlighted the resilience and future potential of HBCUs, driven by visionary leadership and community support, setting a powerful tone for advancing educational equity and excellence.
