Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 08, 2024 Miya Bailey, a renowned tattoo artist and visionary gallery owner, exhibits unwavering concentration as he meticulously tattoos a client’s leg within the intimate confines of City of Ink, located above his inaugural contemporary art hub, Peter Street Station. Known for his calm demeanor and singular focus, Bailey seamlessly balances his artistic endeavors with entrepreneurial ambitions. In September 2023, he unveiled his latest venture, Old Rabbit Gallery, a testament to his mission of revitalizing Atlanta's art scene. Originally from Asheville, North Carolina, Bailey relocated to Atlanta in 1994 to pursue an art career and escape urban challenges. For Bailey, art transcends solitary creation, embodying a social journey that thrives on collaboration. Inspired by Peter Street’s vibrant cultural tapestry and its once-abundant art galleries, Bailey seized the opportunity to breathe new life into the locale with Old Rabbit Gallery. His aim was clear: to cultivate a dynamic space where artists converge, exchange ideas, and evolve together. Central to Bailey’s ethos is a profound belief in community and artistic camaraderie. His galleries serve not only as exhibition spaces but also as hubs of creative synergy, nurturing emerging talents while celebrating established voices. Plushette Ellis, curator of Old Rabbit Gallery, highlights Bailey’s dedication to empowering artists and fostering a supportive artistic ecosystem. The current exhibition at Old Rabbit Gallery, "Troublesome," curated by Mr. Soul, an artist whose journey reflects Bailey’s commitment to Atlanta, explores themes of adversity and cultural identity. Mr. Soul’s poignant artworks, including the provocative "Dusted and Disgusted" series, confront societal issues such as systemic oppression and personal tribulations. His art resonates deeply within Atlanta’s artistic community, drawing inspiration from the city’s rich musical heritage and social dynamics. Looking ahead, Bailey’s artistic endeavors continue to unfold with anticipation. His upcoming solo exhibition, "My My," scheduled for September 2024, promises to further enrich Atlanta’s cultural landscape. Through his galleries and artistic pursuits, Bailey remains steadfast in his dedication to fostering dialogue, inspiring creativity, and amplifying the voices of Atlanta’s diverse artistic community. Bailey's commitment extends to supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), which play a vital role in nurturing African American talent and culture. His galleries serve as platforms for HBCU alumni and students, providing opportunities for them to showcase their work and contribute to Atlanta’s thriving arts scene.
