FORMER HBCU STANDOUTS READY FOR SUMMER OLYMPICS CHALLENGE
|
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 08, 2024 Former Bethune-Cookman University track and field standouts Sade McCreath and Monae’ Nichols have secured their spots to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, marking a significant milestone in their athletic careers. Sade McCreath, originally from Ajax, Ontario, competed for Bethune-Cookman under the guidance of coaches Donald Cooper and Garon Jackson. She distinguished herself as a member of the Wildcats' track team, participating in events such as the NCAA East Preliminary 4x100 relay and the 100-meter dash. Her dedication and outstanding performance earned her a spot on Team Canada for the 2024 Olympics, specifically on the 4x100 Women’s Relay Team. McCreath aims to contribute to Canada's efforts to medal in this event for the first time since 1984, having helped achieve a season-low time of 42.98 seconds at the World Athletic Relays, showcasing her readiness for the international stage. Monae’ Nichols, another standout from Bethune-Cookman, competed in track from 2018 to 2021 before transferring to Texas Tech. During her tenure at Bethune-Cookman, Nichols excelled in the long jump, earning the MEAC championship title and making impressive showings at NCAA championships and preliminaries. Her journey to the Olympics culminated in a standout performance at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon, where she achieved a season-best long jump of 6.86 meters on her final attempt, securing her place on Team USA for Paris 2024. Both McCreath and Nichols exemplify the talent and determination fostered at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) like Bethune-Cookman. Their achievements not only highlight their individual prowess but also underscore the crucial role of HBCUs in nurturing elite athletes who compete at the highest levels of international sport. As the 2024 Paris Olympics approach, all eyes will be on McCreath and Nichols as they represent their respective countries with pride and strive to leave their mark on the global stage of track and field.
