VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS DISCUSSES ABORTION BANS AND HBCU INVESTMENTS AT ESSENCE FESTIVAL

VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS DISCUSSES ABORTION BANS AND HBCU INVESTMENTS AT ESSENCE FESTIVAL
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 08, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris has maintained a busy schedule, attending the Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Boule in Dallas before speaking at the 30th Annual ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans. At the ESSENCE Festival, she participated in the Global Black Economic Forum, discussing critical issues facing the Black community.

During her speech, Harris addressed recent Supreme Court decisions and their implications, particularly concerning reproductive rights. She criticized the rollback of abortion access, highlighting its disproportionate impact on Black women and linking it to high maternal mortality rates among African Americans. Harris also denounced ageist criticisms aimed at President Joe Biden, defending his leadership and experience.

The ESSENCE Festival is renowned for fostering candid conversations within the African-American community. Harris engaged with a predominantly Black audience, emphasizing her upbringing and the influence of her family in advocating for justice. She underscored the importance of voting as a means to achieve social change, echoing sentiments shared by other speakers at the event, such as actress Jenifer Lewis.

the vice president also spotlighted the Biden-Harris administration’s efforts to court undecided and Trump-leaning Black voters. It highlighted key policy achievements, including capping insulin costs for seniors, expanding the child tax credit, and making significant investments in historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). These initiatives were praised by figures like U.S. Congresswoman Nikema Williams, who commended Harris for her advocacy and leadership.

In addition to policy discussions, the festival featured calls to action from influential voices like U.S. Representative Maxine Waters, who championed greater representation and equity in financial services for African Americans. The event underscored the Biden-Harris campaign’s strategy to distinguish itself from the Trump campaign by focusing on issues directly impacting African-American communities.

Overall, Harris’s presence at the ESSENCE Festival underscored her commitment to addressing systemic inequalities and mobilizing support among Black voters ahead of the upcoming election. The festival served as a platform for crucial discussions on voting rights, social justice, and economic empowerment within the African-American community.
