HBCU ENROLLMENT SOARS AMIDST NATIONAL DECLINE IN COLLEGE ATTENDANCE
|
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 09, 2024 The Forbes article examines a notable trend amidst a nationwide decline in college enrollments: Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are experiencing a remarkable surge in both applications and enrollments. This trend not only defies the overall decline but also underscores the increasing appeal and importance of these institutions in higher education. During the last academic year, several HBCUs reported significant increases in admissions and acceptances for the incoming class of 2027. Institutions such as Fort Valley State, Albany State, Alabama A&M, Clark Atlanta University, and Morgan State were among those that saw notable spikes in enrollment. For example, Howard University received a staggering 37,000 applications for its 2,500 freshman spots, marking a 12% increase from previous years. Similarly, Florida A&M University received 1,939 applications by mid-June and admitted 3,877 students, with an 18% admission rate. Edward Waters University experienced an even more dramatic surge, with 10,457 applications for its freshman class—a remarkable 161% increase since 2019. Several factors contribute to this unprecedented rise in interest and enrollment at HBCUs. One significant driver is increased media attention and endorsements from influential figures and celebrities, which have heightened the visibility and desirability of HBCUs among prospective students. Dr. William E. Hudson, Vice President of Student Affairs at Florida A&M University, credits this heightened visibility as a major factor in the surge of applications. Moreover, the article notes that societal shifts, particularly a heightened awareness of racial justice issues following events like the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, have also played a role. The decision by the Supreme Court to bar race-conscious admissions in colleges in June 2023 has further underscored the appeal of HBCUs as institutions where students can find a supportive environment that reflects and respects their backgrounds and experiences. Jennifer Price, Vice President of Enrollment Management at Edward Waters University, highlighted how increasing student admissions has bolstered the school's reputation and influence, creating a positive feedback loop that attracts even more high-quality applicants in subsequent years. Personal stories also illustrate the allure of HBCUs. Janelle Cotton, a recent graduate of Florida A&M University, shared her experience of feeling at home in the familial and supportive environment at FAMU. For her and her twin sister, attending FAMU was a lifelong dream rooted in family tradition and the desire for a nurturing educational setting that understood and celebrated their cultural heritage. In conclusion, the surge in applications and enrollments at HBCUs reflects a growing recognition of the unique cultural and educational experiences these institutions offer. They provide a supportive environment where students can thrive academically and personally, surrounded by peers, faculty, and staff who share their backgrounds and understand their experiences. As societal dynamics continue to evolve, HBCUs stand out as beacons of inclusivity and academic excellence, attracting a diverse array of students seeking community and belonging in their educational journey.
