Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 09, 2024 Delaware State University’s Division of Institutional Advancement organized its 14th annual HBCU Philanthropy Symposium from June 30 to July 3 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Md. The four-day event brought together a diverse array of participants, including officials from 53 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), representatives from Minority-Serving Institutions, and attendees from corporate, nonprofit, and federal government sectors. Founded by DSU and spearheaded by Dr. Vita Pickrum, Vice President of Institutional Advancement, the symposium served as a pivotal platform for HBCU development professionals to exchange insights and strategies on effective fundraising and sustaining institutional growth. Keynote speaker U.S. Congresswoman Alma Adams highlighted the financial hurdles faced by HBCUs and advocated for increased support, emphasizing their substantial economic impact and pivotal role in producing black professionals. Recognizing excellence in advancement leadership, the symposium honored Dr. Harry L. Williams with the inaugural Dr. Alma Adams Leadership Award. Additionally, the Advancement Leadership Award was bestowed upon Dr. Angela Minniefield and Rodney Trapp for their significant contributions. The Walt Disney Company received accolades as the Corporate Partner Award recipient, underscoring its commitment to advancing HBCU initiatives. A highlight of the event was the HBCU Innovative Solution Competition, which awarded Connie L. Cochrane, Assistant Vice President for Alumni Relations at Texas Southern University, the first-place prize of $10,000 for her innovative "I Love My HBCU Day of Giving" campaign. This competition, facilitated by the Pete du Pont Freedom Foundation, showcased creative approaches to fundraising and community engagement within the HBCU network. In recognition of Dr. Pickrum’s profound impact on the HBCU community through her leadership of the symposium, she was honored with a special proclamation. The event underscored ongoing efforts to bolster HBCUs through philanthropic endeavors and strategic partnerships, ensuring these institutions continue to thrive and serve their crucial educational and societal roles.
