MISS NORTH CAROLINA CROWN GOES TO HBCU STUDENT, READY FOR MISS AMERICA
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 10, 2024 Carrie Everett, a sophomore at North Carolina Central University (NCCU), recently won the title of Miss North Carolina, securing her place as the state's representative in the upcoming Miss America pageant. Hailing from Johnston County, Everett's victory was celebrated during a ceremony on June 30. In her journey to the crown, Everett shared a poignant reflection on her humble beginnings, revealing that she entered the competition with just $40 to her name. This personal narrative underscores the financial challenges many young women encounter across the country. She expressed a deep belief in the transformative power of the Miss America Opportunity, highlighting its historical and ongoing impact on young women like herself. With her newfound title, Everett is committed to fostering a culture of equity within the Miss America brand, aiming to empower and inspire future generations. Throughout the competition, Everett passionately advocated for her community service initiative titled "We Need Equity to Build Communities." Her advocacy and platform resonated with judges and audiences alike, earning her not only the title but also significant rewards. She received a prize package that included $20,000 and a car for the year from Knox Auto Sales in Dunn. Additionally, she earned $3,500 in scholarships through various awards such as Preliminary Talent, Preliminary Evening Gown, the Vocal Talent Award, and the Rookie Scholarship. Her performance of "And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going" from the musical Dreamgirls showcased her vocal prowess and stage presence, further cementing her standout status in the competition. David Clegg, president and chairman of the Miss North Carolina Organization Board of Directors, lauded Everett's achievement as an opportunity to showcase the unique talents and civic commitment of NCCU students to the state and beyond. Everett's win marks a significant milestone as she becomes the fourth Black woman to capture the Miss North Carolina title since the pageant's inception in 1937. Her predecessors include Deneen Graham in 1983, Alexandra Badgett in 2019-2020, and Karolyn Martin in 2022, highlighting the growing diversity and representation within the pageant. Carrie Everett's triumph not only celebrates her individual accomplishments but also underscores the importance of empowerment, equity, and community service in pageantry and beyond. Her journey exemplifies resilience, determination, and a commitment to making a positive impact, setting a powerful example for young women aspiring to make a difference in their communities and beyond.
