HBCU ATHLETIC CONFERENCE UNVEILS REBRANDING AND WELCOMES THREE NEW MEMBER UNIVERSITIES

Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 10, 2024 The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference has undergone a significant transformation, rebranding itself as the HBCU Athletic Conference. This strategic initiative aims to elevate visibility and celebrate the impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in collegiate sports and broader societal contributions. Under the leadership of Dr. Kiki Baker Barnes, Commissioner of the newly named HBCU Athletic Conference, the organization is committed to providing opportunities for HBCU students to excel both on and off the field. This includes enhancing their visibility in academic settings, athletic arenas, and within financial institutions. The rebranding effort coincided with the announcement of a landmark three-year sponsorship deal with Hope Credit Union, marking the largest sponsorship in the history of the HBCU Athletic Conference. Dr. Barnes emphasized Hope Credit Union's pivotal role in advancing shared goals, particularly in addressing the racial wealth gap starting with essential institutions like HBCUs. In addition to this partnership, the HBCU Athletic Conference has expanded its membership by welcoming three new universities: Stillman College, Voorhees University, and Wilberforce University. This expansion brings the total number of member institutions to thirteen, spread across eight states and one U.S. territory. Central to the rebranding is the adoption of a new motto, "Where Winners Thrive," which encapsulates the conference's dedication to fostering excellence in athletics and holistic student development. The motto underscores the conference's commitment to nurturing athletic achievement while also supporting the overall well-being and success of student-athletes in all facets of their lives. Overall, the rebranding of the HBCU Athletic Conference signifies a renewed focus on amplifying the achievements of HBCUs in collegiate athletics and beyond, aiming to empower students and celebrate their contributions to sportsmanship, academics, and societal impact.
