HBCUs Make Excellence Possible: The Legacy of the Orange Blossom Classic

HBCUs Make Excellence Possible: The Legacy of the Orange Blossom Classic
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on July 11, 2024

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have become the common theme in countless minority success stories. HBCUs continue to lead in producing over 70% of African American doctors and dentists, 50% of African American engineers, and 50% of African American public school teachers nationwide. I am excited to share an upcoming event that embodies their commitment to excellence and leadership: the Orange Blossom Classic.

Scheduled for Labor Day weekend, the Orange Blossom Classic will feature a historic game day matchup between Alabama State University and North Carolina Central University. This event not only showcases thrilling athletic competition but also highlights how HBCUs make excellence possible through their significant contributions to education, sportsmanship, and community pride.

  • Empowering Through Education: Though HBCUs make up only three percent of the country’s colleges and universities, they enroll 10% of all African American students and produce almost 20% of all African American graduates. This underscores the pivotal role they play in shaping future leaders.
  • Accessible and Affordable: HBCUs tackle financial obstacles for Black students, offering a 28% lower cost of attendance than comparable non-HBCUs. Notably, 40% of HBCU students feel financially secure during college, versus 29% at other schools. The Orange Blossom Classic supports this mission, having provided over $400,000 in scholarships.
  • Notable Alumni: From Durham, NC's Mayor Leonardo Williams of North Carolina Central University to friends of OBC and entertainment icons like Wendy Racquel Robinson and Lynn Whitfield, HBCU alumni consistently excel in diverse fields, including entertainment, entrepreneurship, and public service.
