CHARTING THE FUTURE: HBCU CHIPS NETWORK SETS STRATEGIC COURSE IN ATLANTA
|
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 15, 2024 The HBCU CHIPS Network, a consortium comprising historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), community colleges, nonprofit organizations, and industry stakeholders, recently convened in Atlanta at the Georgia Institute of Technology’s campus to establish its strategic direction and governance model. The meeting, held on June 3-4, 2024, was co-hosted by Clark Atlanta University (CAU) and Georgia Tech, gathering over 30 representatives to chart a new course for the U.S. semiconductor industry. Under the leadership of Frances Williams, Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs at CAU, and other key organizers, the event aimed to solidify the Network's role as a catalyst for diversity and innovation within the microelectronics sector. Attendees included representatives from HBCUs, historically Black community colleges (HBCCs), nonprofit organizations, and industry experts. Dietra Trent, Executive Director for the White House Initiative on HBCUs, attended the first day, underscoring the event's national significance. Central to the discussions was the establishment of a clear strategic vision for the HBCU CHIPS Network. This vision positions the Network as a pivotal hub for collaboration among HBCUs, government agencies, academia, and industry. The Network's goals include enhancing research collaboration, securing funding under the CHIPS Act, and fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce capable of meeting the demands of the growing semiconductor industry in the United States. Michael Wilkinson of Leadership Strategies facilitated the strategic planning sessions, which resulted in a refined vision statement for the Network emphasizing its role in creating talent pipelines, promoting research innovations, addressing disparities in facilities, expanding domestic capacity, and ensuring shared accessibility across all Network stakeholders. In addition to outlining its strategic direction, the Network established a robust governance and operational model. This model includes regional representation across five designated regions in the U.S. Each region will contribute expertise in microelectronics research and development, with selected board members forming the leadership structure responsible for guiding the Network's initiatives and activities. Several committees and working groups were also established to focus on critical areas such as technical advisory, education and workforce development, innovation and entrepreneurship, contracting, facilities access, communication and technology transfer, and assessment and evaluation. These committees will convene regularly to drive progress within their respective areas and report outcomes to the broader Network. Looking ahead, the HBCU CHIPS Network plans to host an annual conference that will showcase research outcomes from participating HBCUs and HBCCs, as well as provide a platform for industry engagement through student-focused career fairs. This initiative aims not only to elevate the profile of HBCUs in microelectronics research but also to facilitate meaningful connections between academia, industry, and government. The success of the initiative is underpinned by sponsorship from key industry players including ASML, Micron, Microsoft, and Synopsis, demonstrating broad support for fostering diversity and innovation within the semiconductor industry. Overall, the HBCU CHIPS Network emerges as a transformative force, poised to redefine collaboration and innovation in microelectronics research while championing diversity and inclusion in the workforce.
