The event featured a diverse array of cultural performances and notable appearances. Texas Southern University’s Ocean of Soul band performed energetically, both on stage and during marching routines. An in-house DJ kept the crowd lively throughout the evening. Gospel legend Kirk Franklin and his choir delivered stirring renditions of ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ and the ‘Star-Spangled Banner,’ adding a deeply resonant cultural touchstone to the event. Opal Lee, known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth, made a special appearance, symbolizing the historical significance and community pride associated with HBCUs. Representatives from each of the "Divine Nine" Black Greek organizations made impactful appearances, showcasing unity and tradition within the HBCU community. The event drew an enthusiastic audience of nearly 17,000 fans, underscoring the growing popularity and significance of HBCU events on a national stage. Presented by T-Mobile and powered by the MLB-MLBPA Youth Development Foundation, the HBCU Swingman Classic featured the best baseball talent from HBCUs, marking the beginning of MLB All-Star Weekend in Arlington. The game itself was tightly contested, culminating in a 5-4 victory for the American League team, who thwarted a ninth-inning rally from the National League. Grambling State University’s outfielder Tiger Borom emerged as the game’s MVP, showcasing his skills alongside other standout players from various HBCUs. Borom expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete and connect with players from different HBCUs, emphasizing the joy and freedom of playing the game in such a supportive and celebratory environment. Overall, the HBCU Swingman Classic not only celebrated athletic talent but also served as a powerful platform for cultural expression, community pride, and recognition of HBCUs' contributions to sports and society.
