DOE AWARDS SMARTVILLE $10M GRANT FOR INNOVATIVE PROJECTS
|
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 15, 2024 Smartville Inc., headquartered in Carlsbad, California, and renowned for its leadership in electric vehicle (EV) battery circularity, has initiated a transformative partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED). This collaboration entails a substantial $10 million, five-year initiative under the Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) Demonstrations Program’s Second-Life Smart Systems (SMART) project. The primary objective of this initiative is to repurpose retired EV batteries for various applications aimed at enhancing grid resilience and advancing clean energy technologies. Key highlights of the SMART project include: DOE Grant: Smartville has secured a $10 million grant from the DOE OCED to support its LDES project. This funding is critical for exploring innovative approaches to energy storage using recycled EV batteries. Focus on Repurposing EV Batteries: The initiative focuses on repurposing retired EV batteries, which typically have reduced capacity for automotive use but are still viable for other energy storage applications. By extending the lifecycle of these batteries, Smartville aims to contribute to sustainability efforts and reduce waste. Educational and Training Opportunities: A significant aspect of the SMART project is its commitment to providing educational and training opportunities. Specifically, partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and disadvantaged communities will create pathways for learning and skill development in clean energy technologies. Strategic Partnerships: Smartville has forged strategic partnerships with key entities such as EVerged, HBCU Community Development Action Coalition (CDAC), Denmark Technical College, Dillard University, Luna Development, Southern Power, and Cox Automotive. These partnerships enhance the project's reach and effectiveness across multiple geographical locations. Project Locations: The SMART project will be implemented in several locations across the United States, including San Diego and Los Angeles Counties, CA; Orangeburg and Denmark, SC; Atlanta, GA; and New Orleans, LA. These diverse locations allow for testing and implementation in different regional contexts. Antoni Tong, CEO and co-founder of Smartville, highlighted the project's potential to enhance grid resilience, support EV charging infrastructure, and promote the adoption of clean energy technologies. This initiative is seen as a significant step towards achieving sustainable and affordable energy solutions for communities nationwide. Congressman Mike Levin (CA-49) commended the SMART project for its potential to benefit underserved communities and improve climate resilience. He underscored the importance of federal funding in supporting innovative projects that address critical environmental challenges. The OCED's LDES Demonstrations Program seeks to validate new energy storage technologies and overcome barriers to their widespread deployment. By awarding the SMART project nearly $1 million for its initial phase, OCED recognizes the project's potential to innovate in the field of energy storage and contribute to national energy goals. Overall, Smartville's commitment to innovation and sustainability in energy storage, coupled with its focus on community engagement and educational outreach, positions the SMART project as a pivotal initiative in advancing clean energy solutions and supporting equitable access to technological opportunities If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
