COLLABORATIVE AI RESEARCH FUNDED BY NIMHD: AAMU AND MEHARRY FORGE PARTNERSHIP
|
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 16, 2024 Alabama A&M University (AAMU) has initiated a collaborative effort with Meharry School of Applied Computational Sciences to address issues related to artificial intelligence (AI) biases and enhance AI education. This partnership is supported by a $218,250 grant awarded to Meharry Medical College by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). This grant supplements NIMHD funding for the Meharry RCMI Program in Health Disparities Research. Dr. Ebony Weems, an alumna of AAMU and currently an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Science/Biomedical Data Science, serves as Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) on this research project. Dr. Weems earned her microbiology degree from AAMU in 2009, followed by a master’s degree in secondary education and teaching from Belmont University, and a doctorate in biological and biomedical sciences from Meharry Medical College. Dr. Weems is leading the development of virtual tutorials and AI ethics modules designed to educate students on the ethical implications of AI in Biological Sciences. The goal is to deepen students' understanding of how AI can impact health disparities. These educational resources will equip students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to analyze and address AI biases in biomedical research and healthcare contexts. The collaboration between AAMU and Meharry School of Applied Computational Sciences highlights a commitment to advancing AI education, promoting ethical awareness, and addressing health disparities through innovative research initiatives supported by federal funding from NIMHD.
