PRESIDENT OF FAMU TO STEP DOWN FROM NATION'S TOP-RANKED HBCU
|
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 16, 2024 Larry Robinson, who has served as President of Florida A&M University (FAMU) for nearly seven years, has announced his decision to step down from his role. The exact date of his departure will be determined following discussions with FAMU's trustees, as stated by the university. Under Robinson's leadership, FAMU achieved significant milestones, including being ranked as the top historically black college and university (HBCU) for five consecutive years and achieving recognition as a Top 100 public university in 2023 by U.S. News & World Report. In a prepared statement, Robinson reflected on his tenure, emphasizing his deep belief in the transformative power of HBCUs in shaping lives and nurturing talent that serves communities and families. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to FAMU's legacy, calling it the privilege of a lifetime. Robinson's leadership faced challenges, notably surrounding a controversial $237 million gift announced by a donor during a commencement speech, which later came under scrutiny for its legitimacy. Despite this, Robinson remained steadfast in his commitment to the university's mission and values. Looking ahead, Robinson intends to take a year-long sabbatical before returning to FAMU in the role of distinguished professor within the School of the Environment. His decision to step down elicited mixed emotions, including pride, joy, and some sadness, but he also expressed hope and anticipation for the future, both for himself and the university. Kristin Harper, Chair of FAMU's Board of Trustees, praised Robinson's leadership and noted his significant contributions to the university's achievements during his tenure. She highlighted his dedication to student success and his unwavering support for FAMU's mission, emphasizing that Robinson's legacy will leave an indelible mark on the university's history. Robinson's association with FAMU spans several decades, beginning in 1995 when he joined as a visiting professor and later served in various administrative roles. His extensive career includes a U.S. Senate-confirmed position at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) before assuming the presidency at FAMU in 2017. Notably, he also served three terms as interim president at FAMU, indicating his deep connection and commitment to the institution over the years. As Robinson prepares to transition out of his role, FAMU, as Florida's sole public HBCU, will embark on a search for its next president under a new law enacted in 2022. This legislation ensures candidate confidentiality until finalists are named, reflecting a commitment to a transparent and thorough selection process for Robinson's successor.
