EXPLORING HBCU CAMPUS LIFE: 100 LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS DIVE IN

EXPLORING HBCU CAMPUS LIFE: 100 LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS DIVE IN
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 18, 2024

Alabama A&M University and Drake State Community & Technical College collaborated to host 100 local high school students as part of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund's (TMCF) Seeking, Observing, and Achieving Results (SOAR) HBCU Scholars Program. This initiative, held from July 7 to July 12, provided a transformative week-long residential experience for high-achieving high school juniors. Its primary goal was to introduce them to the academic excellence and cultural legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Historically Black Community Colleges (HBCCs).

The program was meticulously designed to offer participants a comprehensive immersion into HBCU life. It encompassed a diverse array of activities, including seminars, presentations, networking opportunities, and workshops focused on college admissions strategies, financial aid options, and career pathways exploration. Participants engaged directly with HBCU and HBCC students and alumni, gaining insights into campus culture, academic majors, and the broader educational experience.

Emphasizing inclusivity and accessibility, the SOAR program covered all expenses for the students, including housing, meals, materials, and activities. Moreover, it enlisted the support of fifteen dedicated Alabama A&M University students who served as mentors throughout the week. These mentors, drawn from various academic disciplines, played a crucial role in guiding their younger peers through campus life and educational opportunities.

Kennedi Pugh, one of the mentors and an English major from Southbridge, Georgia, underscored the program's significance in showcasing the rich history and values of Alabama A&M University. She expressed how the program enabled them to impart knowledge about their institution and promote the benefits of attending an HBCU.

In addition to academic pursuits, the SOAR Scholars Program also focused on enhancing students' financial literacy. Participants attended seminars aimed at understanding financial aid processes, including completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and seeking scholarships. Dr. Vernessa M. Edwards, a professor at Alabama A&M University, highlighted the importance of equipping students with these essential skills to navigate the resources available on college campuses effectively.

Dr. Nicole Bell, Dean of Students at Drake State Community and Technical College, emphasized that beyond academic enrichment, the program aimed to familiarize students with college life processes such as effective communication and personal finance management. She underscored the program's broader goal of empowering students to excel in higher education and beyond.

The SOAR Scholars Program not only aimed to cultivate a deeper appreciation for HBCUs but also provided participants with practical skills and knowledge crucial for their future academic and professional journeys. By fostering a supportive environment and offering valuable educational experiences, the program sought to inspire and equip the next generation of leaders and scholars.
